'know your rights' project
the calgary abc believes that if we are going to be able to truly address the injustices of the prison/industrial complex we must, as our statement of unity says, 'first defend all our existing legal rights and freedoms against the constant onslaught of repressive actions by the ruling elites'.
to this end, we run an ongoing 'know your rights' project geared towards getting activists and people in general familiar with the freedoms they do have under our current system. experience has taught us that the police and the court system are more than willing use people's ignorance of their freedoms against them. knowledge is power!
the 'know your rights' project is designed to educate people and gather information about the law as it relates to 'on the street' situations. we have written and published a popular pamphlet entitled, appropriately enough, 'know your rights: a primer for canadians' (available for download on this site) and run workshops on legal rights on an ongoing basis.
although all of the information we provide about the law is thoroughly researched and checked, none of the members of abc calgary are lawyers (thankfully!). if you have complex questions about the legal system or are in serious trouble with the cops, while we will offer the best information we can muster, you should really contact a qualified lawyer.
if you have any questions about or contributions to the know your rights project, contact abc at abc-calgary@anarchistservices.ca
