the 'pie pair' are lily phan and donna mcphee, two calgary anti-povery activists currently facing many charges for their pie-ings of the alberta premier and mayor of calgary in july of 2007. in february, 2008, donna mcphee pled guilty and was sentenced to 30 days for 'assault with a weapon'.

lily phan

on july 9, 2007, lily phan attempted to pie premier ed stelmach at his annual stampede breakfast in protest over the province's inaction on the issues of poverty and homelessness. lily was prevented from fully delivering here banana-cream statement by the premier's bodyguards. she is currently being charged with 'public mischief' for the pie-ing attempt and 'assaulting a peace officer' for smearing a small amount of topping on an alberta sheriff's uniform. in 2003, chris geoghegan successfully pied then-premier ralph klein at the stampede breakfast. chris was sentenced to 30 days in jail for his action.

donna mcphee

update: donna mcphee has been released as of march 5, 2008. in february, 2007 she was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment for 'assault with a weapon'.

according to donna "a pie is a little less humiliating than what [city hall is] doing to low income people". on july 12, 2007, donna delivered a little bit of humility to calgary mayor dave bronconnier in the form of a chocolate cream pie. using the element of surprise, she made a solid connection. donna is currently being charged "assault with a weapon" for her efforts to highlight the problem of poverty in calgary, the 'weapon' in question being, presumably, the pie.

abc
the calgary chapter of the anarchist black cross is dedicated to assisting donna and lily in their defense through solidarity and financial support. the judicial over-reaction to these acts of protest -- even going so far as to call a pie a 'weapon' and a smear of cream 'assault' -- is designed to put a chill on dissent and distract the citizens of calgary from the real crimes of violence being committed against the poor and homeless by the state and capital.

abc calgary supports lily and donna but does not speak or issue statements on their behalf.
