Riots continue in Abu Gharaib Prison.
Submitted by anarcho_beard_face on Mon, 09/14/2009 - 17:24.Inmates at the notorious Baghdad prison rioted for two days for better conditions and in complaint of severe mistreatment. The prison now under Iraqi control and renamed Baghdad Central prison, still suffers from severe mistreatment of inmates. Riot set mattress on fire and even seized control of an assault rifle from a guard in an effort to further their cause. Some of the demands were better more humane treatment in the prison, and a protest against the abusive behavior of the guards.

Leonard Peltier Denied Parole.
Submitted by anarcho_beard_face on Thu, 08/27/2009 - 02:02.
We are sad to announce that yesterday Leonard Peltier was denied parole. He was not only denied his freedom but was given a 15 year hit.
On September 12th, Peltier will be 65. It will be his 33rd birthday behind bars. Held captive for a crime he did not commit. Imprisoned because of his sense of duty to protect his people and their culture. Sadly, he is just one of many held in US prisons because of their determination to fight injustice.

benjamin nottaway sentenced
Submitted by frymaster on Thu, 01/22/2009 - 21:59.
On Thursday December 4th a Quebec judge sentenced Barriere Lake Acting Chief Benjamin Nottaway to forty-five days in jail, in addition to fifteen already served in pre-trial detention, for participating in peaceful blockades intended to draw attention to violations of Barriere Lake's rights by the Canadian and Quebec governments.
Barriere Lake has been demanding that Canada and Quebec honour signed agreements and that Canada appoint an observer to witness and respect the outcome of a new leadership selection in accordance with Barriere Lake's Customary Governance Code.
"It's shameful that the government of Quebec would rather throw me in jail than fulfill their legal obligations by implementing signed agreements," said Acting Chief Nottaway, a father of six who passed his twenty-eighth birthday in jail last Thursday. "Meanwhile, the Government of Canada continues to interfere in our internal affairs while trying to wash its hands of responsibility for this situation."

pie pair member lily's statement on her trial
Submitted by frymaster on Wed, 01/14/2009 - 05:22.
"first of all, i want to thank everyone who has shown such support and encouragement to me while i am going through the legal system. it makes the process a whole lot easier!
previously, on the first day of trial, the crown prosecutor had presented five witnesses and my lawyer had me take the stand. the first day was adjourned before i was cross-examined.
today was the second day of trial and actually only lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes. i was cross-examined and my lawyer presented one witness for the defense. the verdict was adjourned to a later date, after february.
result: inconclusive. i don't know if i will be found guilty on any charge. there is still the possibility of jail...but not until february at least!
highlights of first day of trial: the cops said i was wiry and strong and that i was a handful. the crown presented video footage from ctv and it showed i actually touched stelmach's hat!! my aim is vindicated!
highlights of second day of trial: i debated the physics of cream pie with the crown and whether it was possible pie filling could fly backwards. we did agree that the physics of throwing pie filling is different from that of throwing a baseball. the judge let me wear my scarf around my head to keep warm. my witness debated the consistency of cream pie with the crown; eventually, they agreed it was 'loose'.
well, that's the gist of it.
i'm happy i'm not in jail tonight but once the system has you, your life is theirs until they spit you out :)
still, my situation is more comical than dire. the system has persecuted and is persecuting people in worse ways, so i encourage everyone to support canadian political prisoners (well, ALL political prisoners, really, but the ones in canada are the ones we can significantly support), families in the child welfare system and all those caught in the legal system because of poverty and racism.
thank you to all again and hopefully, i will be writing the next update on this side of the cell!"

Submitted by frymaster on Mon, 01/05/2009 - 17:23.
ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- A well-known community activist who worked with protesters at last year's Republican National Convention in St. Paul says he's an FBI informant.
Brandon Darby, an organizer from Austin, Tex., who gained prominence as a member of Common Ground Relief, which helped victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, has announced in an open letter that he has been working as an FBI mole and said he will testify at the Minnesota trial of two fellow Texans accused of hurling Molotov cocktails during the RNC, The New York Times reported Monday.
In an interview with the Times, Darby defended his decision as "a good moral way to use my time," telling the newspaper he wanted to prevent violence during the convention at the Xcel Energy Center.
David McKay and Bradley Crowder, both also from Austin, are scheduled to go on trial in Minnesota on Jan. 26. If convicted on all counts of making and possessing Molotov cocktails, each faces a prison sentence of up to 30 years.
"I am well aware that I've stepped outside of accepted behaviors and that I've committed a sin in the eyes of many activists," Darby told the Times.
